Friends of the North Baltimore Library Established
The Friends of the North Baltimore Library held its first annual meeting on January 27, 2009 in the Wolfe Community Room. All people who had purchased memberships were invited to this meeting. At the meeting, those members present formally established the organization, set up purposes and elected officers.
The officers elected were:
President – Jaimye Bushey Vice President – Tonya Emahiser
Secretary/Treasurer – Pam Van Mooy Library Liaison – Connie Phillips
A preliminary constitution was presented and adopted by those present. Special committees were discussed and chairmen were appointed. The group learned that 37 individuals or families had joined the organization during its membership drive. The discussion then moved to what projects the organization wants to pursue during the next year. It was decided that the FOL would purchase some give away items for the National Library Week promotion, pay for the Summer Reading finale speaker, and a wireless router to make the library a WIFI site. Other possibilities were discussed but it was decided to proceed slowly. It was discussed that we should pursue 501 c3 status. Pam Van Mooy would check into this possibility. The last discussion was on fund raising opportunities. It was decided that the group would sponsor a community Book Sale in the spring and possibly fall. The first one was scheduled for May.
First FOL Book Sale: a Success!
The first Friends of the Library Book Sale took place on May13-16, 2009. It began with a Friends of the Library Members Only preview and then three days of open sales. Many items, both donated and collection reduction, plus outdated library furniture filled the Wolfe Community Room. More than $1500 was earned at this first fund raising event. At a special meeting of the Executive Board after this sale it was decided to use some of the money raised to donate $150 to the Summer Reading program for prizes, purchase tables and chairs for grant approved computers, additional items for the Children’s department, and to pursue 501 c3 status. It was also decided to solicit more donations and conduct a second sale on October 21-24. Members are encouraged to volunteer to help during this sale.
Grant Submitted
A grant has been submitted to help fund the filing of the 501 c3 tax free status forms. Filing fees and CPA assistance will cost approximately $500. By applying for this grant, Friends of the Library treasury funds can be protected to follow the purpose of the group, which is to provide materials and equipment to enhance the North Baltimore Public Library.
Executive Board holds Special Meeting
The Friends of the North Baltimore Public Library executive board held a special meeting called by President Jaimye Bushey on June 18, 2009 to discuss revisions to the Constitution and By-laws needed for the 501 c3 application. In accordance with the revisions two At Large Board Members were elected. They are Steve Cram and Holly Emahiser. The group also discussed and prioritized purchases based on funds collected at the first Book Sale. The group decided to make an additional donation of $150 for Summer Reading Prizes, purchase some additional equipment (toys and CD player) for the children’s department and buy tables and chairs when the Gates Foundation computers arrive. The October 21-24 Book Sale date was also set. It was decided that the Friends of the Library would have a temporary tattoo table set up during the Summer Festival. Holly Emahiser agreed to chair that event.
2010 Membership Drive
It will soon be time to begin the 2010 Membership Drive for the Friends of the North Baltimore Public Library. The membership drive officially begins in November, but it has been decided to accept membership applications during the Friends of the Library Book Sale. The different categories are: Individual - $10, Family - $25, Patron -$50, Supporter - $100, and Lifetime - $500. Application forms will be published and also available at the Circulation Desk of the Library. An eco-friendly tote bag will again be given away with each membership. It is hoped to secure 50 memberships for 2010.
WIFI
The Friends of the North Baltimore Public Library recently purchased a wireless router to provide wireless capability to patrons of the Library. This allows patrons to bring their laptop (with wireless capability) to the North Baltimore Public Library, get a passkey from the circulation desk and work on their own computer. The service is free. We have had a number of visitors to our library use this service during the summer. There are only a couple of wireless spots in town so this has been very well received.
Budget Cuts hit our Library
With the recent statewide budget crisis, libraries across Ohio were targeted for cuts in their state funding. The North Baltimore Public Library recently learned that their state funding was being cut approximately 30%. The Board of Trustees, working with the Library Director, has made cuts to the purchase of new books, media, and magazine subscriptions. Library hours have been cut and the staff has had hours cut or been eliminated in order to save our library. You can help our library remain the valuable component of this community in several ways.
First, join the Friends of the North Baltimore Public Library, whose purpose is to provide materials and equipment to enhance our library. You might consider making a donation of money for new books, DVD’s, CD’s or magazine subscriptions. In these hard economic times, please remember to support the library!
New Library Hours
In order to remain within their budget but also available to the community, the Library has set new hours of operation. Beginning in August the library is open from 11-7 on Monday-Thursday, 11-5 on Friday and 10-2 on Saturday. Some programs have been cut or adjusted with these new hours.
Book Donations sought!!!
We need hard back-books, paperback books with covers, useable children’s books, DVDs, and videotapes for the October Book Sale! All items must be saleable, which means they must be clean, and free of mildew or water damage. We are hoping that items that did not sell at your summer garage sale or items piling up at your house will help the Friends of the Library during their October sale. Items may be brought to the library and taken to the circulation desk. Look around…everyone has at least one book they can get rid of! This is a great way to clean house and help the library at the same time! If you have questions, please call the library or talk to those at the circulation desk.
Annual Meeting Announcement
All 2010 members of the Friends of the North Baltimore Public Library are invited to the Annual Meeting which will be held late in January, 2010. Although the date has not been set some items of business have already been identified to be discussed. No officers will be elected at this meeting because the officers serve a two year term which began last year. The group will get an update on the tax free status and proceeds gained from the Book Sale. Membership numbers will also be reviewed. The group will set fund raising and purchase priorities for the coming year. It is hoped that everyone attends this meeting. Watch the newspaper, library newsletter, and signage at the library for specific times and date.
