Local Author and Curator to Speak
Join the North Baltimore Public Library as we welcome Holly Hartlerode Kirkendall, curator of the Wood County Museum and public historian, for a fascinating presentation on her book, Ohio's Infirmary Buildings. Drawing on years of research, Kirkendall explores the history of Ohio's county infirmaries—also known as poor farms—which once provided care for the elderly, disabled, and those in financial need.
Using historic photographs, architectural details, and archival records from counties across Ohio, she examines how these institutions evolved, the people who lived and worked there, and the important role they played in local communities. Her presentation also highlights why preserving the remaining infirmary buildings and their stories is an important part of Ohio's heritage.
Whether you are interested in Ohio history, genealogy, architecture, or local preservation, this program offers a unique look at a little-known chapter of the state's past.
View and Chew & Ohio Goes to the Movies
With July being a busy month filled with vacations and Fourth of July celebrations, the North Baltimore Public Library, North Baltimore Historical Society, and The Virginia
Theater have combined their View & Chew and Ohio Goes to the Movies series into one
special event. Join us on Thursday, July 16, at 6:00 p.m. for a free showing of "Gibsonburg" at The Virginia Theater, 119 N. Main St., North Baltimore.
Based on the inspiring true story of the Gibsonburg High School baseball team, the film follows the Wood County school's remarkable 2005 season. After finishing the regular season with a 6-17 record, the underdog Golden Bears defied the odds by winning eight consecutive tournament games to become the first high school baseball team in the nation to capture a state championship with a losing record.
The theater doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and concessions will be available for purchase. The event is free and open to the public.
Come enjoy an inspiring Ohio story on the big screen—we look forward to seeing you there!
Unearth a Story Summer Reading for all ages continues through July 17th. Be sure to stop in and sign-up!!
Book Chatters
The July meeting will be on Tuesday, July 28th, at 6:30 pm in the Wolfe Community Room. We will be discussing The Names by Florence Knapp.
“Through a prism of what-ifs, Florence Knapp invites us to consider the "one . . . precious life" we are given. Full of hope, this is the story of three names, three versions of a life, and the infinite possibilities that a single decision can spark. It is the story of one family and love’s endless capacity to endure, no matter what fate has in store.”
Stop by the Book Chatter’s display to see a selection of book choices for the year and pick up a copy of the list, or visit the website to view/print your own list.
